Build the real nightly figure
The advertised rate is the starting point of a calculation, not the end of one. Across British Columbia and the Alberta resort corridor the gap between headline and total is routinely twenty to thirty per cent once mandatory fees, parking, and taxes are added.
Do the arithmetic before comparing properties. The cheapest headline rate in a shortlist is frequently not the cheapest stay.

- Local occupancy tax, applied as a percentage of the above.
- Anything the rate excludes that you will certainly use — breakfast, wifi tiers, pool access.
Set an entertainment budget before you arrive

Resort entertainment is a paid activity, and the only reliable way to keep it proportionate is to decide the figure before you travel rather than during the evening. Treat it as the cost of an evening out, fixed in advance and not topped up.
Where savings are real
Shifting dates away from event weekends produces the single largest saving available in British Columbia and the Alberta resort corridor, frequently larger than any loyalty benefit or promotional rate. Midweek stays are consistently cheaper and consistently quieter.
Booking a lower room tier at a better-positioned property usually beats booking the top tier at a poorly positioned one, because position affects every day of the trip and the room only affects the hours you sleep.
Where savings are illusory
Similarly, a distant property with a cheap rate can cost more overall once daily transport is counted. Price the whole trip, not the room.
A non-refundable rate saves a modest amount and removes all flexibility. Unless your dates are genuinely fixed, the premium on a flexible rate is smaller than the loss on a cancelled prepayment.
